A cat has absolute emotional honesty: human beings, for one reason or another, may hide their feelings, but a cat does not. - Ernest Hemingway
Cats are a mockery of society's rules of behavior and etiquette.
I was cooking dinner one night with my puppy dancing around at my feet in hopes of catching bits of awol chicken. After nearly tripping over him, I finally had
enough and told him to lie down. He gave me a poochie look - do I have to? I told him again to lie down and he reluctantly strayed out of the kitchen and slumped onto the floor with a sigh. Meanwhile, two of my cats continued to stroll about the kitchen demanding a feast. To be fair, I shooed the cats away as well. My efforts were met with annoyance and disgust. A few seconds later, the cats came strolling back into the kitchen muttering accusations and threats - promptly ready to snatch up anything that hit the floor. Murray, being such a good puppy, remained under the table looking slightly confused.
But I empathize with Murray - why do the benefits go to the self-absorbed?
Cats have such a wonderful way of ignoring acceptable social behavior. When Buffy's scared, she hides. When Hoagie's annoyed, he bites. When Daisy wants Daisy time, she yells at me until I pick her up. It is in their nature to be exactly as they wish to be.
And I am in awe.
